10. Will
Karol gets a brief challenge from his boss and the other man in the Mercedes who was talking about the land deal. They bang on his door early in the morning, Karol wearing a wife beater white t-shirt and boxer shorts. They are at the door and the balding business partner declares “you beat us to the land.”
They grab Karol and force him into the salon … Karol’s boss says “Choke it out of him.” But mid-attack, Karol lets them know that he’s created a will and if he dies, all of the land will go to the Catholic Church. That ends the attack, apparently it’s a perfect defense in Poland.
Thus commences a negotiation. Karol asks for $50,000 — ten times what he paid for the parcel of land in question. He excuses himself to get dressed, runs into his brother and tells him that soon he’ll be able to pay him back. He grabs his map and takes it downstairs.
There, he lays out all of the properties he’s purchased … I can’t tell if he’s bought three or four, but he offers each for the same 10 to 1 ratio, so we assume that he’s asking for something like $150,000 to $200,000 for everything. His (I assume now former) boss agrees, but tells him he’s a “real bastard.” Karol replies that he just needs the money, which I suppose is the Polish equivalent of Michael Corleone in “The Godfather” saying “it’s just business.”
Next we see Karol dressed in a suit — he now has a driver — and he approaches Mikolaj, who has a Christmas tree tied to his car, presents in the back. He tells him that he’s starting a new business and since 30% of the capital came from the money he gave him, he should consider himself a partial owner — he asks him to help run it with him.
Mikolaj now notices the car — a burgundy Volvo, which is apparently the height of luxury in early 90s Warsaw. Karol says “it’s on the company.” Mikolaj asks for some time to think it over. Karol leaves him, knowing the answer will in time be yes.
As he’s about to get in the car, he notices a funeral procession — and this gives him a new idea in his rapidly evolving revenge plot. No, Karol is not following the “living well is the best revenge” bromide … he has something far more sinister in mind.
