Dominique opens the door to her hotel room, the same shot Kieslowski has previewed in flash forwards already. We see now what Karol’s plan was all along. He’s in her hotel room bed waiting for her.

He says “I wanted you to come. I wanted to be sure. I didn’t want to ask anyone.” Dominque is, of course, shocked. He notes that she cried at his funeral. He asks why. “Because you were dead,” she responds. He asks to touch her hand … which by now readers should be aware holds great spiritual meaning in the Kieslowski universe. As Dominique reaches her hand towards Karol’s she closes her eyes — appreciative of its gravity.

Karol asks to lay his head on her lap — she nods, allowing it. He tells her that he’s wanted to lay on her lap for a very long time. She cradles his head and reaches down to kiss him. There’s a love scene that punctuates with Dominique screaming and the screen turning solid white. We next see the couple lying together in bed.

He tells her “you moaned louder than on the phone.” She agrees and asks him to look at her. Honestly, the movie could have ended here. Karol achieved what he desired. A level of equality had been achieved between the couple. We have no idea where they take it from here — and they’re both clearly crazy, so who knows — but it would have been perfectly satisfying to the audience.

But now, Kieslowski needs a darker, more twisted ending. Karol rises before Dominique. He gets dressed, is about to use the phone, but then goes over to admire Dominique once more, moving a lock of her hair off her forehead. He then looks out the windows, checks his watch and leaves.

Dominique wakes up, looks around for Karol, doesn’t see him there, then goes to her bag, pulls out a business card and calls Mikolaj. She asks him where is Karol? Mikolaj insists he is dead, she insists he’s alive. She begs Mikolaj to help locate Karol because she loves him. Mikolaj responds with his location at the cemetery. Then Dominique hears a knock at the door and tells Mikolaj “never mind, he’s back!”

Except when she gets to the door, it’s not Karol. It’s the Warsaw police. Dominique is being put under arrest for the murder of Karol Karol.
