9. Blank
Karol arrives at a subway station and walks a long platform until he is in between tracks — this system looks very similar to the Chicago Transit Authority’s blue line inside the loop. He eventually runs into Mikolaj and he asks him if the guy still wants to go through with it.
Mikolaj responds that he does — and he’s the man who wants to die. He asks Karol if this changes anything. He tells him no … when asked how he plans to do it, he produces a gun, says that it’s possible to buy anything now.
He ask Mikolaj if he wants him to do it, he nods, and Karol shoots. His friend collapses onto him, the shot in slow motion. We soon see, however, that there is no blood and Mikolaj is conscious. Karol tells him that this shot was a blank, but the next one will be for real. He asks again if he wants him to do it, Mikolaj says no.
Karol says he has to tell him now why he wanted to do it, saying that everyone is in pain. Mikolaj says, sure, but I wanted less of it. He then offers Karol the money, telling him that he earned it … they go back and forth about it, but Karol agrees to take it if he considers it a loan.
We next see the two out on the ice, running, sliding, having fun. They both say that they feel like kids again — which reminds us of when the brothers in Episode 10 discovered the joys of stamp collecting. Mikolaj says he feels that anything is possible.
We return to Karol’s apartment. He is looking again at his map, plotting. With more cash, more is possible for him. We are not sure at this point, however, how much risk he’s anticipated.
