Anniversaries
I have taken several days to think about the next project in my scene-by-scene movie series. Two movies that are front of mind for me right now are the 2000 film “In the Mood for Love” and the 1975 film “Mirror.” It also happens that both movies are celebrating milestone anniversaries — 25th and 50th, respectively.
One factor holding me back on both films is that they are among the most beautiful movies ever made and it seems a bit ridiculous to try to describe them with text. They are pure cinematic treats best experienced as made.
And in the case of “Mirror,” Andrei Tarkovsky has stated in interviews that the movie is not a puzzle to be solved, but a dream-like piece of art meant to be felt. I also don’t think Wong’s film has a great deal to experience and uncover scene by scene.
So my approach this time out might be something different, tackling both films at once, perhaps alternating takes day by day. The fact that the movies aren’t alike could make the exercise more interesting.
One interesting alignment is that both films actually took place in the 1960s, maybe that will open up some avenues to examine.
So stay tuned. I could start writing again tonight, but it also might be a few more days. I’m in no rush.
