Magda seems to sense that something is wrong after Tomek doesn’t call. The doorbell rings and she goes to the door. It’s Art Man again, but she says “I’m not here,” and oddly enough, he takes that declaration at face value and we don’t see him again.

Magda then looks out her window and sees an ambulance driving off — then an old woman walking away towards Tomek’s apartment building. At this point, I don’t believe Magda has seen her, so it’s understandable that she does not connect her presence to Tomek.

She then notices that Tomek’s jacket is still in the apartment. Looking through his pockets, she sees two bus tickets — kind of him to buy the bus tickets. I wonder if he paid for dinner, assuming that food ever arrived.

Magda then does something very much like Kryzsztof in Episode 1 — sensing something is wrong, she takes the jacket and heads over to Tomek’s apartment to check out her intuition. The scene drags a bit as she wander in the building and tries to figure out which apartment is his … but she gets the right doorbell on the first try.

The old woman comes to the door. Magda tells her that she has his jacket, she invited him in. She tells her that her was over at her place that evening and asks where he is. The woman replies that be became ill and went to the hospital but it isn’t anything serious.

She takes Magda into Tomek’s room, shows her the telescope which she assumes he stole. And tells her something “she will probably find funny” — that Tomek fell in love with her, watched her every evening when she arrived home.

Magda does not let the woman know that she already knows all of this. But when she finishes, she asks about her son. The old woman tells Magda that he is gone and will leave again later, it’s in his nature to go away. She says that she feels fear without Tomek in the house.

Magda asks if she could see him in the hospital, the woman replies that he will be home very soon, there’s no need. She asks if she can call, she pretends that they don’t have a phone. Magda leaves, but then quickly returns, knocks on the door and asks what his name is.

The old woman replies Tomek. It seems incredible that she never asked him this directly.

We next see Magda asleep on a couch, still fully dressed from the previous day, including wearing an overcoat. When a shoe falls to the ground, it wakes her up. She walks over to a desk which has a game of solitaire going on. She pulls a card from the pile and drops it. She takes a drink that has been sitting there, at least overnight.

Then she hears a familiar sound — the clanking of milk bottles. She goes to the window, hoping to see Tomek, but sees the old woman struggling with the cart, doing his milk rounds for him.
