On Body and Soul
In my journey through Eastern European cinema, my favorite discovery has been a 2017 Hungary romance called “On Body and Soul.” Much has been made about this being, possibly, an autistic love story, but I think placing such labels distracts from the simple beauty of the film.
There’s a deep, mysterious connection between the loving protagonists, brought together in the beautiful subplot of the characters occupying shared dreams, where they meet as deer.
I think this movie is a wonderful example of what I referred to as “the inexplicable,” the deep, mysterious connections people can have to one another. This short film on YouTube does a beautiful job of pulling out some of the most effective aspects of the film.
