Part 3: Squatting
The details of “Aftersun” don’t all carry deep psychological meaning. Some of them are just easter eggs, little rewards to people who pay attention. Calum and Sophie did more than just make a phone call from that other hotel, Sophie started to play in the arcade … and then Calum gets some drinks from the bar, and then the two of them go hang out at the pool.
Yes, the two of them are resort squatting — staying at a cheaper nearby hotel, sneaking onto the nicer site for the amenities. They decide to play a little pool and Sophie invites a couple of teenaged boys to play doubles against them. One of the boys asks Calum “what’s your sister’s name” and after telling him it’s Sophie, he lets on that he’s her dad. The other boy then says that they aren’t staying at this hotel, actually, their hotel is basically a construction site … meaning they are staying at the same place, but Calum and Sophie keep mum about that.
The scenes that follow detail the rather odd collection of activities Calum randomly picks to share with his daughter. First, after they witness a father dragging his son away from a water slide, Calum then gives Sophie a strange self defense lesson that consists of him trying to teach her how to escape a grasp of her wrists. He becomes extremely serious about the importance of learning this maneuver. The scene then cuts to a part two, where Calum has calmed down a bit and is cleaning Sophie’s face, where he re-explains the importance of her learning self defense so she can get away if attacked, leading Sophie to ask “what if they don’t grab my wrists?” He has no answer to that.
Next, they are back at the pool, presumably at the nicer hotel, and they take turns taking underwater pictures of each other.
Then Sophie gives one of the movie’s most beautiful mini speeches. It begins by her saying that she thinks it’s nice that “we share the same sky.” Calum asks what she means, Sophie elaborates that sometimes at playtime, she looks up to see if she can see the sun, and if she can, she says the fact that they can both see the sun even though they are apart means that they are still together.
This transitions into time together at some kind of low rent spa, where Calum meditates with his eyes closed for a moment, then in the next shot gets Sophie to sit under a cold shower for five seconds. Next they are back to sunbathing and Sophie looks up to para-sailors, asking “can we do that?” Calum says she is too young. She has a very bored look on her face at this moment and I feel sad for her that she couldn’t be doing something more interesting on her vacation, even as she’s enjoying time with her dad.
Sophie is then using the video camera while Calum is taking a shower, making fun of her dad as the amazing “one armed man” and recalling a joke they shared about the tour guide on the bus (by the way, what happened to that tour guide?) They are now back at the ritzy hotel, Sophie seems to have grabbed quite a few desserts from some kind of buffet table. She says to Calum “you haven’t mentioned Claire.”
Calum then asks his daughter if she remembered the guy Claire was dating when he first met her, Sophie says yes. Calum then says that she went back to him and Sophie expresses disappointment, saying that she liked her. Calum says he liked her too. He adds that he won’t be opening up a cafe now, but says he has some other vague plan, then diverts to some future idea to rent a house outside of London, where Sophie asks if she could paint her room yellow.
Right on cue, a bunch of middle aged singers in yellow polo shirts come on stage and start singing and performing the macarena. They notice a waiter starting to make the rounds of tables. Calum asks Sophie if she has her wallet on her. When she says no, he then tells her to throw something at the stage and then make a run for it.
So, it seems like Calum and Sophie aren’t just squatting at this hotel, they’re also grabbing free meals from the buffets. The things that were so much easier to pull off in the 90s.
It’s a strange little vacation for a father to spend with his 11 year old daughter, but Sophie seems to be enjoying herself so far.
