If you’re wondering what writing project is next for me now that the Dekalog is complete, that’s easy — it’s on to the second part of Kieslowski’s Three Colours trilogy, White. And while I have not been a big fan of this movie, I have some good reasons to look forward to it.
First, White features a large number of actors from the Dekalog, so I look forward to pointing them out. It is also his return to Poland (his last film made in his home country) and therefore something of a spiritual sequel to the Dekalog. His TV series wrapped up right before the fall of the Berlin Wall. This movie is an interesting check-in on Poland a few years into its reintegration into a unified Europe.
There’s a stylistic reason for me looking forward to this movie too. Having found a greater appreciation for the dark comedy of Dekalog 10, I suspect that it will carry over to White, which feels very similar to the Dekalog’s closing act.
But my most important reason for wanting to move right into Three Colours: White is very simple … it means that I am getting a little closer to examining Three Colours: Red.
Three Colours: Red is not just a masterpiece, it’s one of the most strangely joyous movies ever made. So even if I have to struggle with some of White’s highly unusual plotting … I know what’s right around the corner and I can’t wait to finish up my Kieslowski study with his final film, the one that earned him an Academy Award.
