Yi YI Part 19: On Your Own
NJ is called away from A-Di by a page to A-Di. We find out that his office has been trying to reach him and somehow had A-Di’s pager number. So what’s the emergency?
This is a little confusing, but it appears that their company has come across a new investor, someone who used to be the arcade business but is now a member of the legislature, who not only has heard of the Japanese video game developer Ota, he’s a huge fan and is ready to invest heavily if they have him signed to a contract.
So NJ goes with his colleague to a very lavish, expensive looking house with a pool in the backyard. The investor, named Huang, is very eager to invest and they are there to meet with him. One of Huang’s reports tells them how eager he is to be part of a project with Ota.
We then get a shot of Huang — who is a shirtless, obese man sitting among a huge number of women in bikinis. He clearly has money to burn, prompting the colleague to tell A-Di: fly to Tokyo right away and sign with Ota.
Back in the office, we see NJ going through a big stack of mail, indicating that he’s taken a break from the business for a while. His secretary is booking the trip arrangements, then comes in to tell him that he has an “international call” and the person has called before.
Nothing in the dialogue tells us that this is Sherry, but you can tell from NJ’s demeanor that it is she. NJ tells her that he’ll be in Tokyo tomorrow. He then looks happy about something she says and calls out to his secretary to find out which Tokyo hotel he’s staying in.
Next we see Ting-Ting, walking and reading while walking on a street, not a sidewalk. That’s a pretty dangerous habit for such a careful girl. She comes to her apartment and once again sees Lily’s ex boyfriend Fatty waiting with an envelope. She tells him firmly once again that she won’t be a go between, but Fatty tells her that the envelope is for her this time.
As she comes into the apartment, she appears to be in a daze. And then she sees her father, who is packing for his trip. He tells her that he has to go away to Tokyo on business — so, even though the nurse will be dropping by daily, she’ll be on her own.
At this point, both NJ and Ting-Ting are probably a little too love drunk, and anticipating what the next few days might bring, to have a real conversation with one another.
